Making Hypertufa Garden Pots Wear rubber gloves. Recipe: 1 part Quickrete 1 part perlite 1 part peat moss 1 part (slightly less) water Mix. Form into a ball. Make the base at least 2 inches thick if the planter is to be large. Use sticks to reinforce mold and to push holes in the bottom for water drainage. Molds: Materials – boxes, bowls, etc., and sheet plastic. Anything may be used, but line with plastic to prevent sticking. Curing: Materials: large black garbage bags and ties to seal When making hypertufa, avoid windy areas. Mist the shaped pot with water before placing it in a large black garbage bag to cure. Remove as much air as possible. Set pot in direct sunlight. It will sweat and remist itself. After 2 to 4 days, check and remist if needed. Let the hypertufa pot cure for about a week. The longer it cures, the stronger it will be. Unmold when you can’t scratch anything off the surface. If the lime in the concrete causes alkalinity, you may soak your pot in water after it is completely cured to remove the excess lime. |
